چکیده

We employ textbook multigrid efficiency (TME), as introduced by Achi Brandt, to construct an asymptotically optimal monolithic solver for the Stokes system. The geometric builds upon concept of hierarchical hybrid grids, which is extended higher-order finite element discretizations, and a corresponding matrix-free implementation. computational cost full iteration quantified, applied multiple benchmark problems. Through parameter study, we suggest configurations that achieve theoretical TME both stabilized equal order Taylor--Hood discretizations. then identify quantify gaps parallel implementations in practice. excellent node-level performance relevant compute kernels presented via roofline analysis. Finally, demonstrate weak strong scalability up 147,456 processes solve systems with more than $3.6\times 10^{12}$ (trillion) unknowns.

Towards Textbook Efficiency for Parallel Multigrid

In this work, we extend Achi Brandt’s notion of textbook multigrid efficiency (TME) to massively parallel algorithms. Using a finite element based geometric multigrid implementation, we recall the classical view on TME with experiments for scalar linear equations with constant and varying coefficients as well as linear systems with saddle-point structure. To extend the idea of TME to the parall...

Textbook Multigrid Efficiency for Fluid Simulations∗

■ Abstract Recent advances in achieving textbook multigrid efficiency for fluid simulations are presented. Textbook multigrid efficiency is defined as attaining the solution to the governing system of equations in a computational work that is a small multiple of the operation counts associated with discretizing the system. Strategies are reviewed to attain this efficiency by exploiting the fact...

Textbook Multigrid Efficiency for Leading Edge Stagnation

A multigrid solver is defined as having textbook multigrid efficiency (TME) if the solutions to the governing system of equations are attained in a computational work which is a small (less than 10) multiple of the operation count in evaluating the discrete residuals. TME in solving the incompressible inviscid fluid equations is demonstrated for leadingedge stagnation flows. The contributions o...

Textbook Multigrid Efficiency for the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations: High Reynolds Number Wakes and Boundary Layers

Textbook multigrid efficiencies for high Reynolds number simulations based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are attained for a model problem of flow past a finite flat plate. Elements of the Full Approximation Scheme multigrid algorithm, including distributed relaxation, defect correction, and boundary treatment, are presented for the three main physical aspects encountered: enteri...

Achieving Textbook Multigrid Efficiency for Hydrostatic Ice Sheet Flow

The hydrostatic equations for ice sheet flow offer improved fidelity compared with the shallow ice approximation and shallow stream approximation popular in today’s ice sheet models. Nevertheless, they present a serious bottleneck because they require the solution of a 3D nonlinear system, as opposed to the 2D system present in the shallow stream approximation. This 3D system is posed on high-a...
